Unlike lead-acid batteries that lose voltage as they discharge, Dakota Lithium batteries deliver consistent power down to the last drop, effectively doubling the usable power compared to traditional options.

Are Lithium Batteries Safe?

Dakota Lithium batteries are 100% safe and reliable. Our Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry is free from rare earth elements like cobalt and heavy metals. It’s non-toxic, lead- and acid-free, non-corrosive, requires no watering or maintenance, and can be placed in any orientation. Unlike other lithium batteries, it won’t explode or catch fire. Each Dakota Lithium battery is safeguarded against overheating, overcharging, and short circuits by a built-in Battery Management System (BMS) microchip, which also extends its lifespan. The batteries are housed in a rugged, waterproof case (though submersion is not recommended as it can conduct electricity between the terminals). For optimal performance, we recommend using a LiFePO4 charger.

How do I charge a lithium battery?

Dakota Lithium batteries perform best when charged with a lithium-compatible charger. Although lead acid, SLA, or AGM battery chargers may work, they will only charge a Dakota Lithium battery to 70-80% capacity due to different voltage requirements (Dakota Lithium charges at 14.4 volts). Will cold weather affect my battery?

Your Dakota Lithium battery will discharge normally within a temperature range of -20°F to 120°F (-29°C to 49°C). Widely used by ice fishers, these batteries perform well in cold environments. However, in extremely cold temperatures, insulation is recommended, and we advise against charging the battery below freezing. For regular charging in freezing conditions, we recommend the DL+ 12V 135Ah battery, equipped with an internal heating element and designed for use in cars, trucks, RVs, off-grid solar systems, and other applications exposed to cold climates.

Can I use this to start my car/boat engine?

Our DL+ line of batteries provides 1000 cold-cranking amps (CCA) of engine-starting power while retaining the same deep-cycle capabilities as other Dakota Lithium batteries. These can be used to start a boat, car, or truck engine. Our standard deep-cycle batteries, however, lack this cold-cranking ability and are not suitable for engine starting.

What battery do I need for my RV or Camper Van?

The industry standard for most RVs, campers, and van builds is the DL 100Ah battery, a direct replacement for AGM and lead-acid batteries. For charging off an engine alternator, we suggest a Victron DC-DC smart charger, while solar setups work best with a Victron Smart Solar charge controller.
